The arguments about expensive remanufactured ink cartridges rages on as inkjet printers remain a staple peripheral in modern day computing. For decades, offices and homes have suffered from the high-cost of remanufactured ink cartridges provided by the major printer manufacturers. With a global economy in crisis, the situation gets even worse.
Alternative options to replacement inkjet cartridges are no doubt given a boost by the recent worldwide economic meltdown. Many companies of private users have set their eyes on cheaper offers from third-party ink cartridge providers. Even though the price of OEM remanufactured ink cartridges have slid somewhat relative to previous years, in general, printing with high-priced original cartridges is still hard to justify in a suffering economy
Another issue with some printer manufacturer’s inkjet cartridges is that they use an automatic system that disallows printing when the printer detects that the ink levels are very low. Consumers have been outraged by this since in fact, there is still a fair amount of ink in the cartridges enough to perform a few more printouts. In some cases, the apparently dead cartridge still has more than 30% of ink left. This has led to observations that big printer manufacturers are not playing fair and are out to take advantage of their dominance in the desktop printing market.
A Growing Interest in Continuous Ink Systems.
One solution to the high cost of branded inkjet cartridges is a technology called continuous ink supply systems (CISS or simply CIS). This involves the use of an ink delivery device that will require replacing the printer’s normal cartridges with one that is connected to silicone tubings that are in turn connected to a larger and easily refillable supply of ink.
A typical inkjet cartridge holds about 8 millilitres of ink. In contrast, continuous ink systems are sold with 80 millilitres of ink – 10 times more than the originals. In terms of pricing, the 8 millilitre cartridge costs about £20 whilst the CIS set is less than £30. The cost savings with continuous ink systems are immediately obvious.
Quantity and Quality Compared
Normal replacement inkjet cartridges yield about 100 to 150 pages of text in draft mode on the average. Continuous ink supply systems easily beats that number as it can easily print out thousands of text and images with its large ink capacity. But the argument does not lie only with quantity. Print quality is a much larger issue in many printing applications.
During the earlier days of CIS for inkjet printers, the quality of printouts is arguably in favour of original remanufactured ink cartridges. Recent CIS devices have significantly improved and can now deliver printouts that are at par if not better than outputs from OEM and replacement cartridges. Many digital photographers worldwide already use top of the line CIS modified printers to produce final printouts for their clients.
A Final Note on Continuous Ink Systems
Whilst CIS devices are truly economical replacements to remanufactured ink cartridges, these continuous ink systems are not fool-proof. Make sure they are fully compatible with your printer and are sourced from reputable companies before completely swearing off your existing remanufactured ink cartridges.
