Why battleships in the 1890s is covered with machine guns?
On each model and the image of a battleship of the end 19th century, it is covered in alaways machine guns! (On the deck, gunwale, top turret, even in the lifeboats!) My question is, what are they? Theye'd be great cons Loow / slow flying aircraft, except there were no planes in 1890! And they would do almost no damage to an enemy ship, and the main guns would prevent them from ever being that close! So what is that They are fine and why did so much? Thank you!
They were intended to be used auctually cons destroyers, which had been introduced in the previous decade. Destroyers have been quick and fast, and while they carried torpedoes, as party poppers from WW2, they could still be a threat to larger vessels in number! Because they were so small and fast, it was very difficult to achieve with ships main weapons, not to mention the extreme Overkill! guns would be very effective against small, unarmored destroyer, yes! (Remember, torpedoes in the 1890s had a range of 400 meters maximum, they could not be shot off the outside of the range of a gun!)
